负笈异乡，寂寞有时是难免的，但我有杀死寂寞的绝招：透析卡拉OK。这是个能让你口语脱胎换骨的技术。
最初听了著名的合辑《Now 5》，极为钟爱，很自然取出歌词跟着唱，随即发现这是个绝妙的游戏！歌词朗朗上口，只要听熟了旋律，看着歌词就能唱起来。偶尔碰到几个生词，电子词典处理便可。
尽管我的歌唱造诣与国际巨星们相差好几光年，但只要听着歌曲跟着唱，立刻可以和歌星们共鸣，乃至忘我的陶醉境界。随着专辑《Coast to Coast》放歌，我仿佛成了Westlife第六人，一起踏着音乐的节拍，无拘无束于海边漫步。
唱中文歌的人多，唱英文歌的人寥寥无几，因此透析卡拉OK给生活带来了无穷新意。亲朋同学聚会卡拉OK，人人只会唱国语粤语，独我一人唱了十几首英文歌，让人耳目一新。大学宿舍里几位同窗好友亦随着我的透析卡拉OK喜欢上唱英文歌。当年我们曾经定下一首“舍歌”：Backstreet Boys 的《I want it that way》，经常分声部排练，模仿“男孩组合太上皇”的和声合唱。后来我们的“组合”访问了北京市神经伤残儿童医院，为小朋友们演唱——虽然听不懂，他们仍然报以热烈的掌声……
透析卡拉OK需要歌词。每次练歌，我总要把歌词从磁带盒或CD盒里抽出来。歌词缺失或“欠奉”的话，就到网上搜索。歌词的本身和歌手的演绎都是艺术化的，有时可能不易听明白。Boy Zone婉兮清扬，《No matter what》还好懂，Michael Bolton凭沙哑名闻天下，《When a man loves a woman》就很难听清了。只要歌词在手，你马上就是“情歌王子”，什么歌都会唱。
英文歌确实比中文歌难唱。中文是由单音节字组成的，字与字之间又没有连读，所以歌词很容易和旋律音符对上号。英文可不一样，单词大多数是多音节的，词于词之间连读得一塌糊涂——西方音乐人就是喜欢在单词内部做文章，随心所欲地将单词中的音节赋予音符。例如挪威才女Lene Marlin唱《Sitting Down Here》每一句均自然流畅，可是我们唱起来不是长了就是短了。更具挑战性的是某些英文歌有时将数个音节塞在一个音符里，甚至对句首的单词不赋予任何音符，仅以微弱、短促的发音处理，你可能根本听不见。例如：

划线部分如果唱到每句第一个音符里，后面的词肯定没法唱完，因此你必须迅速地动一动嘴皮，然后再按旋律唱后面的内容。幸好，只有少数歌曲需要这种特殊处理。
诚然，唱英文歌需要若干技巧，但是在享受的状态下，掌握这些技巧非常容易。人家歌星怎么发出重鼻音、扁嘴音，怎么气运丹田拖长尾音，我们在旋律和节拍的辅助下是很容易模仿的，只要跟唱几遍，就似模似样了。很多歌星喜欢以夸张的面部肌肉动作、极度的声门扩张表达强烈的情感，我们也跟着“装腔作势”，口语更加练出“味道”来了。
例如：
“more”、“for”、“before”的元音是/Э:/，电影中美国人老爱发成/Э:ə/，我一直模仿不像，两个元音的长短比例和过渡始终处理不好，不是/Э: /长了就是/ ə /长了，总觉得别扭。后来发现，/Э:ə/是歌星们的拿手好戏。Avril Lavigne（艾薇儿）的名曲《Complicated》中有：
chill out，
what you yelling for?
lay back，
it's all been done before
……
我跟着这位火热的小妹妹唱第一遍就找到了感觉，从/Э: /到/ ə /那种难以描述的圆滑，轻易上口。所谓“地道美式发音”，不过如此。
唱了几百首英文歌以后发现，英语的发音技巧原来就是唱英文歌的技巧！英语发音的全部奥妙，就在歌星的倾情演绎中得到充分的体现。我不晓得什么叫“失去爆破”、“不完全爆破”，我只晓得尽量模仿歌星唱歌，久而久之发音便大有长进。
